The Girl In The Song: Madeleine D’Arcy
“Lady Madeleine”* by Marianne Faithfull
Madeleine D’Arcy was the girlfriend of Rolling Stones photographer and Keith Richards’ assistant Tony Sanchez (aka Spanish Tony).
Not much is known about Madeleine apart from the circumstances of her death in the 1970s. She died in the bedroom of her apartment of an apparent drug overdose but had bruises all over suggesting foul play. She was found by her close friend Marianne Faithfull. Marianne had to wait alone with the body for five hours before the police arrived at the scene.
Shaken by this tragic experience she wrote the song “Lady Madeleine” that appeared on her album “Dreamin’ My Dreams” in 1976. According to Marianne it was the first song she had written since “Sister Morphine” in the late 1960s.
And Spanish Tony don’t know what to do
He’s missing you, darling Madeleine
His strange world has all fallen through
And he wonders, was his love in vain?

*The actual song title is “Lady Madelaine” but is refered to as “Lady Madeleine” in “Faithfull”which is the correct spelling of her name.

Marianne Faithfull performs the Italian version of “Morning Sun” on Italian TV. It says 1967 at the source but I’m suspecting it was filmed in mid to late 1966.

Many musical mavericks eventually mellow out. They make records that are either glorified fan fiction version of their former personas or collections of trying-too-hard synonyms. That is why it is great to hear those that still challenge themselves, once they get much older, that they still have that drive for the unknown. Marianne Faithfull is one such person. Her latest works are brilliant additions to her oeuvre, although do not ask her about their idioms, her name is the genre enough. Give My Love To London is, for instance, an assembly of tunes about regrets and anger that are augmented by Mrs. Faithfull’s voice that seem to veer between an empathy and a sneer. The vocals on the tune in the link are definitely of the latter variety, although there are traces of the former. Moreover, it is a song about the attempts of leaving an unpleasant situation that offers no catharsis. It seems that Mrs. Faithfull wants to say that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
